| | Playstation 3 Folding@home Begins with Impressive Numbers ( Apr.08 ) | | | | | | | Join us today Folding@home with your Playstation 3!

Playstation 3 owners now find a new meaningful way to make a good use of their consoles' supercomputer capability.
An v1.60 update to the PS3 system software was released on March 22, 2007. Besides the long awaited background download feature, a distributed computing software, Folding@home, has been included in the patch.
Folding@home is a distributed computing project that is run by Stanford University. The goal of the project is to research protein folding mechanisms in the hope that this will lead to medical treatments for related diseases. Using the Folding@home program, you can participate in this project over the Internet. Note that the program must first be downloaded and installed on your PS3 system.
Because of the supercomputer like processing power of PS3's CELL processor, according to the client statistics of the project, the calculation speed benchmark has been doubled only within few days of PS3's participation. If the PS3 owners will let their console running 24/7 and when more PS3 join the program, the calculation speed will be boosted even further for sure.
According to Folding@home's site, the PS3 is expected to use about 200W while running program. While the Folding@home might be utilitizing the CELL processor more than any Plsytation 3 games up to today, when our Playstation 3 is running the Folding simulation, it is just as silent as it usually does in gaming. We did not measure it precisely but we feel the temperature is slightly higher than in gaming. Up to now, our PS3 has been running for 3 days continuously and it just looks fine.
We started a 'Gamebaz' Folding@home team starting April 4, 2007. Our team is currently contributed by: 1. Playstation 3 console, which is usually idling in our office since its launch 2. Core2Duo E6400 system, which is used for normal office application such as customer e-mail handling
Our team number is #64857, we sincerely invites all our customer / site visitor to join us donating your spare CPU / PS3 time to this meaningful research program. If you are running Folding@home and have not yet joined a donating team, please feel free to join our team by entering the team number #64857 in your Folding@home program.
